What are your favorite business and/or motivational books to recommend for business and career success? How have they helped you personally?

I have a long list, but I'll share one of my top 5:
It's a 37-page booklet called you2 (actually you-squared): A High-Velocity Formula for Multiplying Your Personal Effectiveness in Quantum Leaps, by Price Pritchett.

This little booklet is a short, quick read, but really packs a powerful message. The take-home message that has really changed my way of thinking is the example of a fly inside a house, trying desperately to fly through the glass of a windowpane. Across the room, ten steps away, the door is open. With only a fraction of effort, the fly could have it's freedom, but alas, it keeps banging itself against the window over and over again to try to escape.

The book goes on to discuss how to "Quit trying harder", "Think beyond what common sense would allow", rely on the unseen forces, seek failure, try something dramatically different, plus much more.

Whenever I encounter a problem in business, I think back to the book and the example of the fly, and say to myself, "How can approach this situation differently? Let's look at it from a different 180 degree perspective."

What business books would you recommend?

Excellent thread, Eva!

One of my favorite books (one that I consult every day!) is WISDOM MADE IN AEMRICA, by Dr Criswell Freeman.

This book is a compliation of famous quotes (some of them not very well known but extremely powerful) from such greats as:

Thomas Edison
Mark Twain
Helen Keller
Martin Luther King, Jr etc

To give a couple of examples:

"Don't compromise yourself - you're all you've got" (Janis Joplin)

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!" Franklin D. Roosevelt

"As a cure for worry, work is better than whiskey" Thomas Edison.

This book was sent to me by Ryze member Heidi Caswell and provides my daily inspiration - reading a couple of quotes from this book is followed by my 10/10 - ten things that I am grateful for and 10 things I want to manifest in my life (part of the Law of Attraction).

"Be the most AWESOME part of your day - if you do, the greatest things will come your way!" Althea Garner

Gosh, I'm reading books all the time so there would be too many to list. Right now I'm finally getting around to reading Stephen Covey's "The 8th Habit". Well worth the wait.

I've just finished the 4-Hour Work-week by Tim Ferriss. The companion site is www.fourhourworkweek.com.

This easy to read, common sense approach is for anyone looking to accomplish more in less time. Really good ideas on personal outsourcing, email handling, customer service and most importantly for small business people, learning how to get out of your own way.

If you're compiling a list of most reads, add this one to the list.

The most basic of all books for me, long before the distilled concept of the secret and many of the newer books is "Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I first read this book when I was 22 years old. I had just sold my first business and was literally asking myself, now what?

Great! Another must read.

Finally, have you ever heard of "Who moved my cheese?" This very thin book written by Spencer Johnson, M.D. If you're thinking of leaving a regular job for the life of an entrepreneur, you must read this book.

If you think you may not be independent enough, read this book.

My list could go on and on.

Here's a suggestion, if you're not reading at least 1,000 words per minute with at least an 80% comprehension rate, this should be your first stop on the road to more knowledge. There are many very inexpensive Internet bases courses that will help you get from where ever you are to that level in a couple of weeks. The more you read, the faster you'll become.

I took my first course in the Military for FREE. I hated reading Military manuals and so I thought reading faster would be the answer. I was right. I hadn't even thought about how it would ultimately help me in college and businesses.

Just a thought . . .

What an awsome thread. My favorite three books are as follows.
The Holy Bible. This book has the answers for everthing I may ever go through.
"Slay Your Giant" by Tim Darnell. This book helped me face my fears, and replace them with faith. It helps people walk through the fire without getting burned. My wife was brought out of a deep depression by reading and applying the principles in this book.
The third book is "Your_Virtual_Vault" by Richard Hockert. This book helped me protect my assets from known and unknown preditors alike.
The last two books on the list can be downloded from my website. Slay Your Giant can be downloded for free.
God Bless You All.
