In an article written in HerbalGram: The Journal of the American Botanical Council (issue 74, p. 26), Cathleen Rapp, ND, says that "clove gel provides dentists with an alternative to benzocaine for topical anesthesia in their daily practice, especially for use with children and in areas where cost and availability limit access to pharmaceutical topical anesthetics."

So, opt for safer anesthetics. Have your doctor use clove oil instead of benzocaine. Or take your own bottle of therapeutic-grade clove oil with you when you have a dentist appointment =)
