Seeking a "techie" resourceViews: 329

Julie Bestry
I have a client who is seeking a free or low-cost softwaresque solution, and while I'm technically savvy in some respects, I bow to the greater knowledge here. I'm hoping I can do an adequate job explaining what we seek.

My client would like to create, for want of a better description, recorded online tutorials. Once created, the visitor would be able to click on the link and hear audio instruction combined with real-time "video" of what the computer screen would actually look like every step of the way, and possibly even pause the tutorial and follow along performing the same actions on his or her desktop. So, if my client has a staff for his company, he'll be able to create this tutorial so that if a new person joins, the person would be able to view the tutorial to get up to speed without a lot of handholding.

I was recently on a GoToMeeting.com teleclass where were were on the phone LISTENING to the moderator and in GTM's window on the screen, we could see EXACTLY what the moderator was doing in her own browser...clicking, opening new browser pages, etc. I know that GoToMeeting.com offers an option to record such webinar events, so this company (and others like it) is an option, but doesn't provide ENTIRELY what we're seeking.

Although there was also an open GoToMeeting.com instant message window in addition to the browser window (solely operated by the moderator), there were no other open windows. What my client is seeking to do is to provide a tutorial that would allow someone to see what an entire desktop looks like during the procedure. For example, he'd like the viewer to be able to see how to FTP something to/from his site, or how to copy text from Word and paste it into the WYSIWYG editor for his bloggers, using the "paste from Word" function.

What we envision might have running commentary and would show the screen:

--as someone types in a user name and password on the intranet site
--as they select from the options on the menu
--as they type in items in a WYSIWYG editor
--as they open Word, navigate to a file, open it and copy some text
--as they click back in the WYSIWYG editor, click on "Paste From Word", and select "OK"

and so on. In other words, the "video" portion of the tutorial needs to fill a large enough part of the screen with what an actual monitor screen would look like, rather than just what one browser screen might show.

Does this kind of software or service sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance for any ideas or off the wall suggestions. I'll be checking back in periodically throughout the holiday week, so if I don't reply right away, please know I do appreciate any guidance.
