Geese A Loo Batman!

I had a subject all picked out and then uh, had too much
client stuff on the front burner to get in here on Friday.
But here it is - Notes on Ryze pages.

How does your Ryze page help you in the search engines?
It can you know. Adding links to your sites, blogs, and
all that is fine and dandy but plenty of SE's go beyond
that because your words ARE ALL indexed.

Here is a for instance. Go to my ryze page and see the
teeny-weeny, itsy-bitsy text at the top? It is a list of
some pertinent stuff relating to the services my companies
offer. No big deal. I put that text there some time ago,
went off, and forgot about it.

Most of my services are in very competitive markets so I
really did not think much about how that would play out as
far as folks finding my ryze page. Would it matter if they
did? Perhaps not, but the SE's are odd birds when indexing
words on a page. All the words are separated and re-
joined, plopped in a big ol' database and when we search
with any number of phrases (different combinations); the
se's might find our websites or ryze pages and display the
results.

This is actually a hoot. I find it amazing and know it
will do me no good whatsoever but I have to tell you that I
spent a portion of time this morning checking several
search engines for a term that, like I said, won't do me
any good but IS something to consider.

With this term - "batgirl ks" my ryze page is listed pretty
well:

1 in Google
1 in AOL (google engine)
1 in MSN and LIVE
1 in Netscape (AOL google engine)
2 at Yahoo
2 at all the web
5 at altavista

I probably would not want anyone who is searching for
batgirls in KS (and who are looking for web services), for
clients anyhousen but I think you can get my point here.

If you had someone else build your ryze page or even if you
did it yourself, it could be found and help your marketing
efforts. In my case, this point is moot. But if your
niche market is unique you many want to consider or
reconsider the top text; the very first words that you are
using on your ryze page.

It could help but then unless you are a batgirl in KS, you
could find yourself with some less than desirable lookers
on too.

Sometimes I have to just shake my head and wonder...

Eileen :)

Solid One-Way Incoming Links

SEO for the long haul.
You did your research and know the keywords and key phrases you have used are right for your business. You have a website with good solid content.  You have decent placement for your niche market in google and other search engines. What's next?

The drudge work.
Keep your list of those keywords and key phrases handy. They are your guide to one of the most overlooked linking strategies. One-way incoming links means searching out directories that can lift your PR and help you gain good targeted traffic to your website. Don't know where I am going with this? You will and it is so blindingly easy, you'll wonder why you did not think of it yourself. You are at the beginning on the path to the drudge work.

One Linking strategy.
Using your main search term first, one where your website shows up on page one in google, look at every listing on page one. Are there directories there? There almost certainly should be as large directories show up in just about any search term search. Start at the top and work your way down. Go at least three pages deep too.

Apply to be listed in these directories.
Take the time to enter all the pertinent information for each directory you are applying to be listed in. I know, I know, it's spouted all over the place that google is penalizing large directories for paid inclusion.  This has nothing to do with that. If a directory is showing up on page one now, it has not been penalized. DUH. At least not yet.

Don't take short-cuts. This supplies you with incoming, one-way links to your website that are using pertinent keywords and key phrases that match what you are using at your website. There are some websites that list directories and will submit your site to lots of them. At least they say they do. Ignore those sites unless you want to be listed in directories that don't have a chance of helping your PR and could actually hurt your ranking.

Choose carefully where incoming links come from. Quality is always better than quantity. Getting listed in directories is time consuming, not a lot of fun - "the drudge work." I can guarantee you though that if you do it properly, the rewards can be momentous, in the long run.

Add this to your daily schedule:
• Add one incoming link to my website every day.
• I will NOT pay for listings.

If you do it in this fashion, it will not feel like such mind numbing work. At the end of one year, you will have 365 good, valid incoming links from directories that google seems to like. After all, they are listed and placed well.

OH, you use a lot of different key words and phrases, right? Then it's a good thing you have that list handy. After getting free listings in all the directories on the first (at least) few pages of google search, move on to the next keyword or key phrase. Move down your list. You may also find that you come up with new key phrases during this process.  Tweak your website content when and if necessary.

At this point, you are starting over with the process. See what I mean?
Drudge, drudge, drudge... very boring.
But also, very effective.

Questions? Surely you have some...

Blessings.

Excellent advice, Eileen!

I want to elaborate a bit on the point you made...

"I will NOT pay for listings."

This is VERY important. About 3 months ago, Google started penalizing websites they believe are either buying or selling links. And, rightly so. Search is supposed to be organic, not bought!

So, it is very important you read the directories thoroughly to be sure they do not sell links in any part of their website or packages. Some directories get around this by charging for another service and rewarding you with a link in the directory. For example, Best of the Web (http://www.botw.org) charges for website analysis and rewards all those that pass with a link in their directory. It is a link...but it isn't considered a "paid link" because you are purchasing the analysis service. BTW...Best of the Web is considered an authority site on Google! So, if you were to pay for the analysis and get rewarded with a link, http://www.botw.org is a good one to put on the list.

Best,

Feb 29, 2008 7:03 pmFriday's SEO post on FRIDAY! Yeah! - Readability.#

Eileen Brown

Readability - What is it?

How easily text can be read and comprehended. Sound simple? Reading ease is accomplished by certain writing styles and functions. Research has shown text that is easily read improves comprehension, retention, and reading speed. The persistent reader will read on if certain factors are present.

The readability factor is more important than the message.  It's true.  If the text at your website or blog is written without the readability factors in mind, people will not read on.  If they do not read your text, your message does not get through. Period. This is part of a mind game that has to be played out properly for your text, and thus, your message to get to your potential clients or customers. Into the mix is comprehension of your message.  Breaking this down into the recognized readability formulas might be the best way to get this message to you.

In the text, these features are:
1. Content
2. Style
3. Design
4. Structure
The design can include the medium, layout, illustrations, reading and navigation aids, typeface, and color.

For the reader the features affecting readability are:
1. Prior Knowledge
2. Reading Skill
3. Interest
4. Motivation
The reading skill lists below are not 100% accurate but give a best rough estimate of how to reach a target market.

The browser (readers) skill levels:
1. Most Americans (U.S.) read at the 8th grade level.
2. Recommendations for writing legal and health information weigh in at the 7th grade level.
3. Laws sometimes require writing medical and safety information at the 5th grade level.

First interesting note: English textbooks are most readable when laid out with 20% whitespace on the page.

Second interesting note: Most of today's blockbuster writers write at the 7th grade level. Including J.K. Rowling, John Grisham, Stephen King, and Dan Brown.

If you write your website content and blog entries in Word (and plenty of us do), you have the option of using the Flesch-Kincaid feature.  This will tell you the grade level in which your text is written.

Learning to write for a class of readers you may be unfamiliar with is very difficult. It takes method, training, and lots of practice.

PS: This articles stats are:
24 % Passive sentences.
58.2 Flesch reading ease.
8.1 Flesch-Kinciad grade level.

PPS: I should take the time to edit/improve my articles.  Sheesh.

Hello Fellow Networkers.

In case you did not notice and if you are not in my network
here on Ryze, you did not receive notice.

Last Tuesday I had a hard drive crash of the monumental
type. I managed to get back online yesterday with an
entire new computer system and network set up here in the
office. Thank goodness for quick workers and smart (geeky)
computer guys! LOL.

Sorry I missed posting last Friday - just shoot me!
