He has a great blog post, 50 Online Applications and Sites to Consider, that I believe you will find to be be very useful as you expand your social networking activities.

I consider myself pretty informed in this area, but he has links to sites I'd never heard of and there are a growing number of recommendations in the comments to his post.

what to do next?
hit all the bars? -
find one that I like?
I don't drink - so perhaps I might consider leaving Hoboken?
go back to New York City -
there has to be a point where the time spent socializing on the social networks will become counterproductive - how can I figure out when that is? if it is not that right from the beginning?

Man, I loved being on Washington St for the restaurants and one of the best pizzas in the world!
Second, you make a good point about their being way too many social networking sites, but my take on it is that they're all there so you can take a look at them, if you so choose, and decide which ones suit your fancy. I mean, Ryze isn't everyone's cup of tea, and neither is LinkedIn. Facebook suits some people but not really a lot of people my age or older, and most of us have MySpace, but the younger crown loves it. And of course we've talked about Twitter here and in another network.
So, we like choices, and this country is big enough for even more choices.

1. social networking can be a huge waste of time 2. we love having a choice
For myself, I tried MySpace, but never really liked it. I've been a member of LinkedIn, but still don't understand how to make any real use of it. I like Facebook, but don't much care for the changes they made to our profiles, recently.
Ryze has been one of my favorites, but the world is passing them by. This is the only place that I participate that doesn't have RSS feeds, for instance.
Technorati used to be the most important place for promoting my blogs, but it has declined in significance and I rarely visit the site anymore. I did claim my new blog and put Technorati badges on it, but I no longer add Technorati tags to what I write.
Blogging remains one of my primary ways to interact with others who are interested in the topics I am. I switched my primary blog to another one powered by WordPress to make it easier to carry on conversations in the comments.
Surprisingly, Twitter has become a very important part of my social networking activities.
But, if we try to spread ourselves too thin, we will certainly reach a point of diminishing returns.
I visit some sites on a monthly basis, others weekly, others daily. Some, I haven't visited in several months, but don't want to cancel my membership because of things I've done there in the past. MySpace is the best example of this.
I'm sure I'll test new sites when they're introduced, but it looks like my regular activities will be limited to five or ten sites that may change over time.
I don't know anything about Hoboken. (grin)

But, if I am at a site for 6 months and don't see any traffic, then it is a waste of time.
I also saw a majore decrease in both Technorati and STumpleupon. I use to get 15 000 visitors a year from SU. About 10k from T. Now I get less than 3k visitors a year from both. Of course - it could be my fault.
There are a few on this list that I want to try.
I am new to twitter and haven't figured it out yet. Private Reply to Suzanne James | | |
