Is there a coming Google Slap for people who misuse social networking?Views: 213

I was reading the latest post on Lynn Terry's blog this morning, Social Media Marketing (A Warning), and I think she's on to something.

http://www.clicknewz.com/1688/social-media-marketing-a-warning/#more-1688

In her blog posting, she refers to another blog article, I spotted Bigfoot on your website doing social marketing, written by Charles Heflin.

http://www.charlesheflin.com/social-marketing-footprints/

I think these two articles bring up good points that are well worth considering.

Just as there are "white hat" and "black hat" ways to approach search engine optimization, there are good and bad ways to engage in social networking.

If you try to game the system using the techniques Lynn and Charles talk about, sooner or later Google will slap you down.

It's best to build your business naturally and not try to artificially raise your rankings.

What do you think?

Act on your dream!

I'm very interested in this and want to know what others think. I have received a ton of invitations to various Ning sites in the past two weeks. At first, I followed, and joined if they had any relationship to what I'm involved in.

I worked on my profiles, I started groups and discussions. I've discovered that no one is responding to the discussions, although I opened with questions that invited response and various points of view. After reading the blog post you reference, I'm even more concerned that my links-back to my websites will garner penalty not reward, from these Ning sites.

What do you know about Ning?

Have you experienced an onslaught of invitations?

Should I bail? Or can these mini-social-sites actually be developed into a "good thing" rather than a potentially harmful thing?

I joined in good faith, hoping to interact with others who are involved in what I'm involved in, being able to ask the questions I have nowhere else to ask, and hopefully, receive some answers and guidance.

I don't want a Google slap!

Hi Karen,

I'm a member of several communities on ning.com and created the community at http://SquidooMarketing.ning.com .

What you are doing, creating profiles on various communities, is not what Lynn was talking about on her blog, I don't think.

Are you using the same account to join multiple ning communities? If so, then you only have one account for the site.

What she was talking about, for instance, is joining MySpace with multiple identities and email addresses.

It has been my experience that communities on Ning.com have a wide variety of interactivity. I'm a member of some where the creator has never come back after opening it. In that case, I assume he/she has little interest or just wanted to create some backlinks.

Other communities are very active.

I have not experienced an "onslaught of invitations" and if I did, I would respond only to the ones that both interested me and fit within my marketing plan.

Does that help?

Act on your dream!

I'm also being invited to every and anything Ning these days. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it, and now I'm ignoring all the group requests because I just haven't had the time to check Ning out. Of course, I think a big part of it is their fault because, like Facebook, it loads slowly, and the look isn't overly appealing.

Hi Mitch,

There really isn't a monolithic Ning; it's a community of communities and each community sets its own look, presentation, and features.

Those can be selected by the community's creator.

My SquidooMarketing.ning.com will be very different from other communities powered by Ning.

Topics covered in communities hosted by Ning can range from business to lifestyle to porn to just about anything you can imagine. I'm a member of about a dozen communities related to Internet marketing and I enjoy my interactions with other members.

However, I've had to drop my membership in some communities where I was constantly pestered by people who just don't understand good email manners.

I never send invitations via email to join my community, but others choose to upload their email address book and send to everyone therein.

So, it's not a simple matter of evaluating Ning.com, but of looking at the communities that are hosted there.

Depending upon the number of RSS modules and video components being used in a community, the site will load faster or slower than others.

I hope that offers some useful info about Ning.

Act on your dream!
