Great cause for feeding the hungry. I was fortunate to visit mother's house in Kolkata and the orphanage. Great work by the sisters and contributors. The sisters at the mother's house are very dedicated.

I applaud The Ehsaas-Ryze "Meal-a-Month".

The 19th Ehsaas-Ryze Meal a month for the month of October happened today. We (Pam,Janaki,Heena & Me) were there at the MOC. The food arrived about 15 mins late. We helped serve the meal and interacted with the people at the Home. Would request Janaki & Heena to post... and know their thoughts.

Post the MOC event, we went to the Navjeevan Home for Girl Children where Sister Margaret was happy to inform us that they finally received the money that was due from the Collectors office on account of their contribution for the Borewell project. She did not say anything about the borewell... so must be working OK. Sister Margaret was all praise for the Ryze effort, esp Dr Shailaja's (Pams Friend) contribution in providing uniforms, shoes for the children. Shailaja also arranged for a movie to be screened at Navjeevan for Dusherra.Thank you Shailaja.

Would request Janaki to confirm on her sponsorship offer for November and request Shivaji to sponsor it for the month of December.

IN the next two months this programme can be reviewed... with a plan for 2009.Those who have visted MOC and been part of this initiative can write in with their ideas.

Diwali greetings to all of you.

We see an orphan and old homeless in the streets, railway stations and almost every where, who sometimes can’t even ask for food or eat any. These are the people who don’t have a cozy home to go to after work like us. What do we do..? We look at them, Pity them, sympathize, to the max give some money! Actually the thing they most need is a shelter, basic food and a little bit of warmth at the end of the day which every human deserves after all. Agreed its easy to point at such issues and question and give long speeches, agreed that you cant bring a old or young orphan home, specially keeping today’s inflation in mind its hard for us to deal with people who are already our responsibility :P. You know what forget bringing someone home, in today’s lifestyles people find it tough to listen to such things or even sit and think about it may be because of the time constraints or sheer lethargy. What can be done..?! Could be the question. People look around there is plenty that can be and need to be done. You need an example check out what these guys are doing.
I feel sorry for myself that I took so long to realize what I missed out on. Being a part of Ehsaas was an experience. It left me with a thought

“A bitter reality that co-exists like a parallel track with our comfortable lives and lifestyles. Its so easy for us to not see what we don’t want to see.”

Its never too late or your contribution can never be small or big, even your presence would make a difference less to the old aged or to the Orphans and more to you. The amount of peace you get after doing something like that cant be measured or bought at any price.

The old age home was a kind of place every teenager, every parent and in fact every individual should visit. If not anything it will help you appreciate life for what it gave to you. It was really refreshing to spend time with the Kids at Navajeevana ! Honestly I went there with an image of dull kids who are in need of some favor from the world but I was totally mistaken. They were so active and happy, happy to have a school to go to instead of begging on the streets or being forced to work. Personally for me they were a energy booster. They don’t need sympathy or pity. They need some affection and warmth. And that little help from the society which can help them grow up as respectable citizens.
And I had funn.. :D.
Thanks Pam and Shiva for getting me introduced to this event.
Looking forward for the event to happen again.
Sorry for being a little late. Had a crazy week at work!

Thanks and Regards,

Heena Chavda.

Apologise for the delay in posting an update here.

The Ehsaas-Ryze Meal-a-month programme has been on for over 2 years now. The place where the meal was being distributed was the MOC (Missionaries of Charity) home for the Destitute & Aged at Musheerabad, Hyderabad. Some issues about the activity merit ryzers attention.

1. It startd off as a once in a month event to serve a meal at the home.

2. Some ryzers, incl Pam, Anita, Kiran, Ansh followed up the meal activity by some vocational training.

3. The sisters at the home did not like interventions beyond serving the meal. The training activity stopped.

4. In an informal meeting it was decided that we continue the meal activity even in the face of some reluctance by the sisters at MOC, as we felt we were serving the old / infirm people at the home.

5. WE notice that the MOC is a place where a lot of agencies are willing to offer support in cash /kind. Whether our "Meal-a-month" was making a difference is not clear. The sisters at the MOC are also not very enthusiastic.Further Ryzers participation was also limited. On a very personal level meeting & spending time at the home via the meal scheme remains a rewarding experience.

6. In a way the "Meal-a-month" activity was supposed to get the ryzers together and create an environment to take up more such causes. Sadly this has not happenned.

So where do we go from here....

7. Discontinue the Meal-a-Month at MOC
8. Continue with the meal a month at MOC.
9. Start with Navjeevan Girls home where the response is better.
10. Look at other areas / institutions.

Lets hear it from all of you to take this further.

Shiva

Hi Shiva,
If the response at the Navjeevan Girls Home was better, maybe it would be nice to continue the 'Meal-a-month' there.
We could probably help in mentoring small groups of the girls and helping with their aspirations in some way.

The question is, why is there this reluctance at the MOC? Do they have more aid than they need? Or they just uncomfortable with the presence of outsiders? If we can pinpoint the actual problem, maybe the solution will present itself.
This is,of course, just my personal opinion!
If it is not all right with the people at MOC we could turn our attention elsewhere .... wherever it will do most good.
Regards.

MoC has more donors, we may look at other institutions which are deprived. We can look at Navajeevana as their response is very positive.

MEANS is also a dedicated institution, Rajiv Bhai, could we think of doing something at them. Few days back my friends had donated washing machine and fridge to MEANS.

Hi...

there are two important issues, we have to discuss and decide.

1. Finding a caterer.

Do you know any caterer who is service oriented n can take up Navjeevana meal prog?

All these days food was supplied by one of Maj Shiva's friend, n he already did it for 2(almost) continuous years. It will be nice if we can find a new caterer.

If you know any one, can you plz bring thm in? He has to deliver food at Navjeevana by 12.30pm on every 4th sunday of the month.

Plzz chk all ur connections.

2. Suitable menu suggestions

We have to decide about the menu.. what kind of lunch we r providing for "kids"? It should be simple and be interesting for kids. and ofcourse nutritious!!

Plz come up with your ideas.

Lets decide these things fast...meal prog is just 3 days away.

Rams , Heena

There is no problem with the caterer. It was being done more on a personal net than any other reason. Having used his services for almost two years we thought it would be better to look for a change. Moreover we need to firm up on a suitable menu for the children.
Planning for the activity in March will give us time to bring more clarity. Would like more ryzers to express their thoughts.

Hi Shiva!
Yes, maybe if we did take a little more time to plan, maybe we could rope in more than one caterer and have them supply meals on alternate months.
This will have the benefit of varying the menu for the children while giving the caterers one or two fixed menus to follow.

This, ofcourse, would need some coordination, but I guess that will be managed.
Regards.

Hi all

Shiamak davar dance school does lot of charity work under the name VAF(victory art foundation). Their main focus is on kids who are orphans/mentally/physically challenged/critically ill children.

every year they go to different orphanages and other schools and help them in various ways. One of them is teaching them dance for free and making them perform on stage.

Its always such a great pleasure to watch these spl children perform and enjoy themselves on the stage.

This year i suggested Navjeevana (home for street children) to them, and they have agreed to include them in the summer funk 2009. And i have agreed to pay them the nominal charge for transport(Rs 2000/-).

Shiamak's instructors from bby will come to Hyderabad and teach these kids, and they will perform in Summer funk 2009 which is on 10th May @ Shilpa Kala vedika.

Today i visited navajeevana, and all the kids there are very excited to perform on stage!

Unfortunately i wont be able to watch the show, as i am leaving tomorrow for a holiday.

Lets wish those kids all the very best!

Dear Ryzerabadis,

I'm happy to be back in Hyderabad, after a two year hiatus at IIMB. I feared I'd be a lost soul at Ryzerabad after such a long gap, but I'm happy to see posts from some known veteran members like Pam, Ravi et. al. I got a sense that nothing much changed, it is very much the same Ryzerabad I left, that I see now too.

I took some time to go through few recent popular threads and felt that this thread is the right place to re-connect myself with all you old pals and lot many new Ryzerabadis.

Am happy to be back in Hyderabad and on Ryzerabad, in particular, and as first activity i offer to volunteer in June (4th Sunday of May is occupied for me) at navjeevana, if meal-a-month is operational there(?)

Great work folks. Ryzerabad rocks!!!
