Why Google Is Not a Russian Company
http://www.moscowtimes.ru/stories/2004/08/23/006.html
Imagine that Google were a Russian company. This isn't as big a stretch as you might think, since one of Google's founders, Sergey Brin, is a native of Moscow.

Quote of the week :-)
"Girls wear such light-colored make-up. It looks very pale. What do you need it for? The color of Turkmen [women's skin] is white. That is the natural look. Therefore, don't use so much make-up. You should be careful in that." -
Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov speaking on 11 August in a televised meeting with members of Turkmenistan's media, art, and cultural world.

Newsflash
Latvia hold Germany in Euro 2004, Czech Republic defeat Holland to become the first team to reach the quarter finals of the Euro 2004 tournament. I believe that soccer aside, this goes on to illustrate the untapped, unparalleled talent and potential that lies in the nations of Eastern and Central Europe. It is just a matter of time before the countries of the former Soviet Union gain prominence they deserve.

A Documentary film by Dr Brian Williams - "Dostum. Afghanistan's Anti-Taliban Horsemen and the War on Terror."
(Sadly I cannot put up the video here yet)

Dr. Brian Williams shot much of the footage for the film himself in August 2003, during his trip from Kabul to Mazar i Sharif and Sheberghan, in northern Aghanistan, where he was able to spend 2 weeks with General Abdul Rashid Dostum. Dr. Williams has conducted extensive field research from Kazakhstan to Kosovo and is the author of "The Crimean Tatars. The Diaspora Experience and the Forging of a Nation," published by Brill in 2001. A Zen quote that puts life's little pursuits in perspective :-)
"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

* If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings." - Dave Barry

*Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. - Horace

*One of the nice things about problems is that a good many of them do not exist except in our imaginations. - Steve Allen

*One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.

* Freedom - just another name for nothing left to lose?

*I am an idealist. I don't know where I'm going but I'm on the way. - Carl Sandburg

Vodka Lovers Corner :-)
Vodka, the "little water," has over 600 years of history, innumerable human stories attached with it, thousands of ways to mix it, infuse it, drink it, cook with it.. to simply appreciate it.

A good toast to start off an evening. (A Russian proverb)
A glass for the vodka, for the beer a mug, and for the table, cheerful company (Vodke - ryumka, pivu - stakan, a stolu - vesyolaya kompaniya). :-)

Comparing Vodka & Russia
Nobody in the world knows what vodka is made out of, and the reason I tell you this is that the story of vodka is the story of Russia. Nobody knows what Russia is made of, or what it is liable to cause its inhabitants to do next. - Notes from Will Rogers' 1924 trip to Russia.

I will keep gazing at you.
