Guangzhou is the southern most part of China. Its more of an industrial town. Depends on what you wanna shop. I would suggest you to go to Shenzhen, which is about 4-5 hours drive from Guangzhou. Shenzhen was developed as an Economic development zone to counter the notion of HongKong being China's gateway to the world. You name it and you get the exact replicas of the best brands in the world right in Shenzhen and at tenth of their cost. Quite a planned city where you can afford 5 star hotels at the cost of our 3 stars!

The best would be to include HongKong as part of your itenary, since its just a train ride into Hongkong from Shenzhen and takes about 5 hours.
