(I agree with Adam that the name TypePad is not inspiring - I hope Anil can help on the marketing side with things like branding.)

Robin Good accidentally posted his reply to me privately, then asked me to post it for him, so here it is. The following is Robin's words, not mine:

Hello Christian. Thanks for bringing this up.
Susan, hi, and yes, I see what you see as well, still:

TypePad future is clearly set already.

The hosted service is meant for those of you that do not manage their own server or virtual host (required by Movable Type, the hosted version of TypePad) and it provides and integrates many of the features expected in Movable Type Pro (end of summer 2003).

Basically, TypePad is targeted at all those would be bloggers that prefer to be as shielded as possible from issues of technology, servers, FTP and similar items as possible.

TypePad is a direct competitor to Blogger who is about to come up with a major announcement as well very soon.

MovableType/TypePad has shown to be a solid and intelligent tool that can significantly empower the nano and micropublishers springing up everywhere.

I myself have been able to flex MT to become a database publishing system to deliver an updateable online reference guide without having to program Perl, customize existing database systems or by having to buy a new technology. MT does it all fine.

I could not the same with Blogger or any other blogging tool available now, maybe with the exception of Pmachine.

So what I suggest to all of you that have been waiting for a way to create and publish your own blog online is to be patient enough to see the upcoming releases of TypePad and Blogger and only then to make a decision.

Being the investment in familiarizing yourself with blogging is still zero, you may also want to consider to try out for now Blogger.com with a free account, and once TypePad comes out give it a test run and see if it can deliver more and better than what you have already got.

My two cents,

Robin Good
