All of us are aware of the Tsunami havoc of December 26th 2004. Even today people are still recovering from the disaster. Help from all quarters of the world has been pouring in – but as the enormity is so severe that there still seems to be a huge vacuum. Thousands of families have been rendered homeless, livelihoods shattered, dreams crushed and the threat of another Tsunami makes them stay awake most of the nights.
Governments, NGOs, Corporate, institutions, individuals – everyone has pitched in with schemes and projects to bring back a kind of normalcy into their lives. JPCC – Jaya Prakash Narayan Community College has come out with a specialized package just for the Tsunami youth who are looking at alternative livelihood. They train the youth in Vocational Skills in either 2 wheeler mechanics, 4 wheeler mechanics,Bakery,Air conditioner mechanics, Refrigerator mechanics,DTP and assistant to nurse. The best part of this Tamil Nadu recognized course is that they also give job placements to the candidates who successfully complete the course. Apart from this the students are trained in Life Skills, Work Skills and General English which gives them a winning edge over all others.
For the Tsunami youth the one year Diploma course is condensed to a six month intensive course wherein from the 4th month the candidate is sent to a Company where he works as an apprenticeship and is even paid a stipend. And on immediate completion of the six months he is placed in a reputed company with a starting salary not less than Rs. 2,500.
This novel concept is being promoted as “Sponsor a Livelihood” which is gaining a lot of notice and Corporate are coming forward to sponsor the Tsunami youth as it guarantees another earning member in the family. GE Chennai has been the first to welcome this initiative and have identified 20 youth of New Kalpakkam which they have adopted. So apart from providing boats and nets, they are also supporting this concept. Lions and Rotary Clubs in Chennai have shown keen interest in this novel initiative and are showing a lot of enthusiasm to enroll their Tsunami youth in the Community College.
As an Independent Consultant who has been actively involved in the Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation work in Chennai was totally impressed with the concept of the Jaya Prakash Narayan Community College. Am trying to promote this novel initiative as I find this another excellent option as a permanent long term measure. Please post your valuable suggestions. For more information please contact
