Stark realities after the Tsunami AttackViews: 127

Kanchana Ravichandran
Splashed in all TV channels and Newspapers about help not reaching the right hands. The clothes which are distributed are often given to the spectators who pose as the victims - take all that they can carry and flee to come back again. Its so saddening to see this happening - I witnessed it myself when I went to Pattinapakkam and Srinivasapuram, one of the worse affected areas in Chennai.
Another thing that I noticed was the wastage of food - every 10 mins vans, lorries, autos, cars etc come with loads of food and keep feeding the same people. And people whose stomachs are full still go there to receive a packet and throw it on the beach. Its such a pathetic situation.
The really affected are in the interior place of devastation. They are still stunned and unable to come to grips with reality. This is just one part of the story - The other is the most scary. We are giving them more food in a day than they eat in a week! So many clothes etc - we are the culprits by indulging them to something they are not used to. They are becoming more and more dependent on us - How long do you think we can support them?
There is an urgent need to let them know that the worst is over and they should pick up the strands of their live and live on. It may appear cruel and harsh but beleive me this is what we got to do now. I request none of you to send clothes - they don't need anymore clothes. In fact I request you to concentrate on other areas as in Chennai we have more than enough supplies.
I am overwhelmed with mails and phone calls of people from other States willing to come and help. Ammucare Charitable Trust has teamed up with Children Welfare Foundation, Red Cross and Theosophical Society. We beleive that we need to reach the most affected at the earliest. We are pooling our resources and if I may say it myself we are able to reach them. I feel if NGOs work with this in mind - and the public too cooperate in handing over whatever they want to give to these NGOs we can save a lot of wastage and there will be an equal distribution and benefit to all.
I hope I have given you a clear picture of what Chennai is - how Ammucare has teamed up with other Organisations and are able to give timely help. Would like to hear from you at the earliest. We look forward in helping u to help those in need. You could visit our site at www.ammucare.org, www.childrenwelfarefoundation.org.
