I can bet my bottom dollar that many have been bitten by this bug, and also have fallen sick of it. I am not against watching Mega - Serials, infact they package it really well and also deal with a lot of family sentiments / relationships, stuff that middle-class community experience, women uprising, et al, and needless to say, they also come up with weird titles, but the level of involvement, interest and participation that viewers evince, bowls me over. Some of my friend’s even quetch over the fact that even the re-telecast is viewed with the same fervour at their households.
The TRP’s (Television Rating Points) are the primary determinant of a channel’s customer base and also the degree of viewership that it is able to generate, and, Mega – Serials form a vital cog in all this. Probably, this is what, I feel, gives rise to more and more of Mega Serials and ostensibly, the “Channel War”, as they term it.
I know that it is the same case in the North as well, with all those “Bahu Serials”, which are being rolled out with consummate ease. Hmm…is there a possibility to change this trend???….I am not able to think of any plausible method to restrict this, if not arrest it completely.
Having said that there is nothing like a credible yarn, spun out with skill, to entertain, enlighten and educate us. The erstwhile popularity of Tamil and Hindi weeklies and monthlies was due in no small measure to the serial stories that appeared in them, regaling the reading public for long years. But the point to be understood by serial makers is not to make it long and boring but crisp and sweet with a definite message.. Albeit the fact that Serials are lengthy, carry the same sentiments and drama it gives career and life to many people forsaken by the Big screen.... Lets hope serials spirngs up peoples thoughts and civilizes them rather than making people sit pot bellied without any spice in it.
