Just thought I give my two bit reg the photographers (for anyone who is interested :-))
I’m putting it in stock parlance – I hope that will be easier to understand.
All the people mentioned above are, without doubt, great.
But:
1. They are already blue chips – everyone knows who there are (even internationally) and that reflects in their price.
2. There are some painters on that list, who have got into photography and are cashing in on their name.
To seriously look at the market, apart from the abovementioned list, one may also want to look at emerging blue chips and mid caps.
This is because:
1. They have not been internationally recognized.
2. Unlike painters, photographers always had another source of income – commercial work. Once the market for art photography opened up, a lot of photographers started given this preference over commercial work. But, since the market is at its infancy, to mention a certain level of income (which commercial work ensured), they are keeping their prices reasonable (actually under pricing themselves, in my opinion, but then, what would I know) so they can sell regularly.
I am not going to name people, as my opinion is going to sound biased. But I would suggest you decide for yourself by looking at a photographers body of work – it is all available on the net – if there is any specific persons work you are looking for and can’t find it, pls let me know and I will try and point you in the right direction. Also, see how international the work looks to you – the more international it is, the better the chance of it getting pickup by galleries abroad – and honestly, in photography, that’s where the money is right now.
