The Vishwa Hindu Parishad had called for a ban on the national anthem ringtone in 2005, stating that it is offensive. "This is an insult to the national anthem and the ringtone should be banned immediately,'' they said, adding the service providers should strictly be asked to withdraw the ringtone." But as far as I know nothing was done by the courts in this case....but if we are required to stand still when National Anthem is playing...how will you move to pick the phone?? Problem of logistics here, eh??
In any case in India the use of National Flag & Anthem are very hypersensitive matters.
'First and foremost is that the respect and dignity should be maintained. '
But the question is, does the use of National Anthem as ringtones constitute respect or disrespect?? The person using such ringtones must be very patriotic afterall... what constitutes respect lies in the eyes of beholder...Narayan Murthy was at receiving end of loads of criticism when he decided not to play the National Anthem in presence of the President in Infosys Campus as 'it would make foreigners uncomfortable'!! (now how he arrived at such bizzarre logic is beyond me).. not playing the National Anthem is more disrespectful than showing interest in playing it.
