partha,

personally, I am of the opinion that intellectual growth in so far as law is concerned only happens when you are abreast of the day to day developments. For that one has to read prolifically. it is true for me and may be for many many others too that unless there was a need or urgency they won't read. such prolific reading can only happen if you are either practising law or teaching law. I have seen a vast majority of my friends who took on employment after their degree or after couple of years of practice crib about there being no intellectual development scope. Even in terms of money, though they might even earn twice as much as a fresh lawyer, ultimately there is a point beyond which one cannot be paid, while there is no maximum cap for a practising lawyer. But yes, patience and perseverence are the keys, which many of us lack or are forced to discard due to societal pressures.
