Hi Ian, To answer the subject "Who is making more money?" it is patiently obvious that people like the owners of the million dollar page and the rich jerk are among the top earners. These folks have hit upon a money making idea and have developed it to the point where they have become wealthy. I would put these folks into the “providing tools and services” category rather than just a “home business”, although they are that too.
To put the question into a perspective that reflects the earnings of the average home business builder, I would like to present a couple of examples from both camps, as I have a foot planted firmly in each.
The majority of my income comes from providing tools and services in the form of hosting, web design, website development, marketing and support. (www.DotCom-Productions.com/cms) Supplemental income in this area comes from promoting affiliate services and products which I enthusiastically support and AdSense displays.
In the straight home business camp, where I sell merchandise, (www.FantasticMachines.com, www.SundanceCrystals.ca) it is a slightly different story. Fantastic does well, probably because I have taken the time to build a large network of sites linking to it and provide links to sites that offer tutorials in the use of the graphic filters. Sundance does not do as well, but it is fairly new and traffic is building slowly.
IMO, the people that do not make it are the ones that sign up and try to promote some product or service that has a lot of competition. Most of these use “cookie cutter” websites which just do not cut it.
If you are serious, you need to develop your niche, whatever that may be. To do so you need your own domain, which is used to build an “interest portal” centered on your product or service.
