Hi Lamar,

I agree with Lindy ... don't confuse technology with the message.

For example, I was hired to lead an internet marketing seminar a month ago by the local Business Resource Centre. There was an abundance of technology available between my equipment and theirs, but I lead the entire seminar without firing up a computer or turning on a projector. I did not want the technology or specific websites to get in the way of the core message and concepts I was teaching.

If you're talking about social networking, have static displays that pose interesting questions (How are X and Y connected? Do you know how many degrees of separation there are between you and President Obama? Between you and the Pope?), and offer just a hint at the answer. Make them curious and eager to learn the answer, for which they have to engage you. At that point if you want to turn on a live feed or set up a two-way conference, or demonstrate the wonders of Facebook or Ryze you can, but you already have their attention and interest. Stop trying to tell them and inform them, and instead help them understand they have a problem or are missing something important in their lives, make them *want* to know the answer, and let them know you have the solution.

Just because technology is interesting to you and me, doesn't mean it catches the attention of the general public. It's what the technology can do for them, and instead of hitting them over the head with your message you need to get back to marketing 101. Why would they be interested in or need streaming video, social networking, etc., then find a way to trigger an emotional response.

One other thing about flea markets and outdoor presentations and technology. If you end up with no power, no internet connection, or a broken piece of equipment, design your presentation so the show can still go on.

Russ
