Mark,
I think business cards can be a very powerful marketing tool - just as business networking events can be a very powerful marketing tool. But, you need to know what you are doing in both arenas. You need to have a properly-designed business card and you need to know how to use it when you attend a business networking mixer. Although you might think that everyone knows how to design a business card and everyone knows how to behave at a business mixer, you might be surprised at the response you get if you simply ask questions about these matters.
Just yesterday, I was at the copy/printer having my business card redesigned. I thought I had something quite clever and I was real proud of it. A friend of mine was with me who is an enterprise facilitator (which means he is a business expert of sorts). He found all sorts of things WRONG with my card that I had never even considered. Suddenly, the woman behind the counter who previously raved about the appearance of my card was agreeing with him.
It helps to get feedback from other people - even on things you might think you really have a handle on - like your business card or how you behave at a business mixer.
