Last year, I got 30 high school students to write letters to the Fox News Channel asking that the network come to my Northern California town for its annual western festival. While I did not get a Fox camera crew to show up, I did get a Fox news correspondent to show up and address the parade crowd from the reviewing stand. That was a first for my small town. The individual letters from the high school students was the initial step that created the necessary buzz.
High school students in my small town get credit toward graduation for community service. However, last year the 30 students got no credit for writing those letters as it was presented to them as a strictly volunteer effort.
This year I am being encouraged to have students make phone calls to encourage better community participation in our town's annual festival. This time, I believe community service credit should be given to participating students. Last year, the town actually lost money due to the low turnout. Does anyone here have experience in putting together a phone bank using high school students? I realize that in using a phone bank calls to people's homes is not possible due to the DO NOT CALL law. But, calls to businesses should not be a problem. Is that correct?
