Hi Joel,
You should always work for the established companies. There are quite a few like PayPal, godaddy.com etc. where you can register yourself as an affiliate and promote their business consistently without resorting to spamming and hopefully you will be earning some amount within 3/6 months. You must educate yourself thoroughly on affiliate marketing though and you have to be extremely focused.
