Dave,
"Trust but verify."
Testimonials are strengthened when the visitor can identify their source and independently get confirmation.
A testimonial from a big-name celebrity is only good when that celebrity gives it via an independent channel such as the Tonight Show. Putting a big-name celebrity's testimonial on your website is useless because he/she can't be reached for confirmation - too many gatekeepers.
A testimonial from an unreachable unknown is worthless because nobody can track down the source to confirm that's what they actually think.
Your best bet is a testimonial from someone who is NOT a big name, but is easily located on the Internet. Someone like me, for example, who Googles well (lots of hits and the top one gets you to the right person). Someone who also answers their own phone.
Good luck!
