Dave,
I was not questioning your authenticity. I was just saying, as Kurt did so well, that with so much information offered today, visitors DO look for confirmation, and testimonials from doctors or high profile sources sort of "invite" visitors to check them out.
An true situation...
There is a huge Internet guru...one of the biggest. Just about every knows him. He's a marketing professional. Well, I went to one of his sites one day and there was a testimonial from a man who owns an insurance company. Since I was not interested in Internet marketing at that time, I wanted to find out what results this offline businessman got from Mr. Guru's writings.
So I contacted the insurance agency owner. Well, he was shocked. He told me that he had never given permission for Mr. Guru to use his testimonial or business name on the Web. He said his words were taken out of context anyway from an email he had sent Mr. Guru. In other words, a private email was used without approval.
But since Mr. Guru was so well known, I asked him what kind of results he got. He told me that I would learn a few tips that are worthwhile, but he couldn't honestly say his business had increased from Mr. Guru's membership package, blah, blah, blah.
So here was a testimonial that I assumed was authentic, only to find that the testimonial was not approved and that the business owner could not attribute any real results. And yet it didn't read like that on the Web.
So no wonder visitors have become less naive and want confirmation.
So it's not about you personally, Dave. It's about offering the kind of credibility that will earn your visitor's trust, as they don't know you.
I have fantastic testimonials - as far as I'm concerned they are the heart of the business - and I clearly state on my website that those original testimonials can be found where they were originally offered - on my Ryze network. Anyone can look up a name in a network archives and find their post. I want my visitors to know these are real people and they can contact them if they want.
I'm not saying everyone has to go that far, but if your doctor friend really wants to help you, he could provide you with either a website url, a city, the name of his practice, hospital, etc. Make him appear as real as he is. I googled the name and nothing came up.
