Despite my fascination with the Poken device, I have to admit there are some drawbacks. For one thing, you really have no choice but to leave the battery in the device running or remove it. There is no on/off switch. Therefore, within a period of 8 months, you are likely to need to replace the batteries. There is no way to simply recharge it. But, perhaps even more important, everyone else you meet MUST have a Poken in order for you and them to benefit. Now, I understand that in Europe, the Poken has become a cell phone app. That's great for them...but not for folks living in the USA and elsewhere.
I found a whole series of services that do something similar to what the Poken does using a cellphone app. But, of the ones I have come across, the one I like the most is MyNameIsE. The reason I like it is because I do not have to own a cellphone to reap a benefit from this app. It would do more for me if I did own a cell phone, but even with an internet tablet, I have the V-Card option.
Whereas Pokens connect to approximately 40 networks, MyNameIsE connects to 80 and the list is growing. Imagine being able to put 80 links in the form of icons on a business card. Links don't go transport you anywhere when you see them on paper. You have to see them online and be able to click them. And, that is what makes a V-Card so powerful. Plus, the fact the V-Card information does not reside solely on the V-Card, but in a cybercloud. That means you are not likely to ever lose the information or need to update it.
MyNameIsE is just one of many V-Card providers. But, I like the way the service has structured itself. You can create one or as many V-Cards as you like...for FREE. Want to see my V-Card? Click here.
Hence, I now believe V-Cards, rather than Pokens, are where the future of the business card lies.
