My quick feedback is about the color scheme. IMHO, it needs to look like a kids' site (even if it's going to be used by parents or some others) -- it should be a lot more colorful. Presently, it's too corporate-blue-ish.

Another small thing I noticed is that when one clicks on a left menu, it loads the new page and expands the menu. Menu-submenu expansion, if given, needs to happen with Javascript/ AJAX without reloading the page, but that's not what you want, as you are changing the page contents as well. Since the new page has the same options as the expanded menu options, I don't think the submenus are needed anyways.

Just my 2 cents, if it helps. You are a veteran, and you might have already thought about these things.
