Becoming a Modern Person - Personal Update 2009 |

So how am I doing 10 years later? Let's see.
Self Maintenance
* Tries to live in the real world - copes with information overload. Check * Maintains a close personal relationship with someone else. (Married) Check * Has some hobbies and interests beyond work and family. Check * Maintains good health, physically fit, eating wholesome foods. Non-smoker. Check, but I'm not as fit as I should be. Putting on a pound or two. * Maintains an inventory of skills and expertise. Maintains own data in several areas. Check
Attitudes Needed
* Adapted to many cultural inputs - bigotry and racism are undesirable. Check * Adapted to many languages: Not shocked when other people use their own language. Check * A modern person is able to maintain a sense of being grounded in a world that is continually changing and where uncertainty is high. Check * To be hopeful about the future of the world and about finding an effective place in it. ? Less hopeful after CPO15, but I still think it's possible for my grandchildren to live a fulfilling life. They will face global problems far more serious than I ever knew. They will less wealthy than we were.
Outputs Required
* Is skilled in reading, writing and speaking. - A communicator. Check * Has confidence to act within the constraints of team membership. Has self-knowledge. Can I check that? Check * Is able to organize many activities according to priority, and maintain a schedule or work. ?? * Socially active - A member of several social and community groups. Check * A leader - Taking an active part in clubs, and organisations. An opinion maker. Check
I'm fairly happy with that outcome.
The response of the world to my list hasn't been good. If you don't like my list write your own. Start with the question: If I'm to be a person well adapted to living in the modern world, what skills, qualities and attributes do I need?
Take your time. I'd been writing my journal for 18 years before I came up with my original list.
