I don't have any test results, but I can say that the general design will cause people to abandon the site. Basically due to the reasons you stated.

I have setup a few PayPal stores for clients with low budgets. This is probably the only case where it makes sense.

If you can afford a low monthly fee I recommend Yahoo Stores.
