I've never experienced a lack or respect or felt treated poorly in my profession. I find the study and practice of usability very rewarding, actually.
What makes the field trickly is that the concepts and standards of usability are misunderstood (or not understood at all) by most companies. In the last year, our new clients have been much more willing to listen and learn the importance of usability. I don't know if that's because it's becoming a mainstream idea or if our approach to explaining it and promoting it has improved.
I've found that customers appreciate what usability can provide a lot more when they come to use to redesign a site that was built with no usability standards. They usually see immediate results with our newer, usable design with increased sales or visitors. When they see more money in their bank account, they're all about usability!
It can be a very rewarding field if you want it to be. I really don't feel that usability experts are treated as "second-class citizens," so don't let that dissuade you. We just have to be more creative in selling our expertise and ideas.
Best of luck.
