I think this is an excellent method... in the right time and place. I wouldn't want to replace my task oriented usability tests with it. However it can prove invaluable:
- when you start where a site/application already exists (revamps)
- There is a big hu-ha inside the client organisation what is the right thing to ask users (aka. if you can't agree on questions, don't ask any :-) )
- When you want to learn about individual discovery strategies (how do different users try to find out what is possible
So I see potential at an earlier stage, when defining the goals is key, less the verification if they can be achieved.
