Images are more than information. A lame image of a stethoscope can do various things, all which impact on usability in subtle ways...
1. if the page is long and scrolly it acts like visual punctuation, letting me know where I am on the page, so I can scan read with more ease... the correct usage of images can improve readability (often helpful for those with dyslexia)
2. It lets me differentiate THIS page from the OTHER really lame stethoscope page I was just looking at. Comparison.
3. Often images force people to break up long and boring text blocks.
4. An image can help people who can't quite remember the difference between stethoscope and microscope...
5. It will help me remember this page when I come back to it next week to buy a boring stethoscope, or was it a microscope.
So, just because some people think that the web page would be a better place, doesn't make it true.
