Dec 16, 2003 5:07 pm website design: usable or creative?
Stephanie Fletcher
IA is an inherent part of making any site design successful, but popularity and success come from much more than structure.

It seems to me that as a reaction against dotcom era site designs, a lot of todays IA related resource and interface/interactive design sites are stripping out the visual design to focus on simpler presentation, that you could argue is devoid of brand personality and creativity? They all fit into a ‘style’ and are accessible etc.. but none expressively stand out.

So coming from a graphic design background, designing with an IA led approach I wonder if my concern with styling is my belief that it will enhance the customer experience and brand values through being ‘creative’ with visual elements, or by adding these visual elements am I compromising the usability and falling into the trap of gratuitous design?
