Hi Stephanie, It depends on exactly what kind of visual elements you are considering. I think being creative is always a good thing. My only worry is when people start getting creative with their labels and other elements that would make it harder for the user to find what they want. I think it's possible to have a stylish site design w/out being to graphic intensive. For example, http://www.answerthink.com, http://www.business.att.com, http://www.boltpeters.com, and http://www.uiarchitects.com, all have a professional and stylish look to them w/out including a lot of art.
I think a site like http://www.mindcomet.com is an example where the design went overboard on creativity to the point of impacting the usability of the site.
