Or it's not web design - it's just design.

While I appreciate this perspective, what if the designer works almost exclusively in the web field but remains limited to front end design? I think over time, it would be difficult to say that person was "just" a designer. On the other hand, I don't feel that thinking so is wrong.

Though I make it my business to understand what others do to make my sites function and shine I've learned a long time ago that some people excel at programmming and others at design. If the job market forces someone like me to learn and intergrate the programming side of web design, they've just lost 1/2 the magic by not hiring a specialist to do it instead.

My brother for example studied as an architect, then later focused on interior design and narrowed even further into lighting. Now he's one of Canada's top lighting sales guys. Now imagine if he were expected to execute construction of the lights, installation and maintenance. Perhaps the analogy is a bit far flung but it gets the point across. We've come to a point where people are being asked to wear so many hats that things are getting sloppy.

Let designers design and programmers program. Unfortunately, like branding, a web designer is what the majority of people think they are and changing the opinion of employers is an uphill battle.
