This is a great post and I hope all heed its low up front cost and long term value! Many companies before and since-assured me (at hiring time) we'd take the time (there was the budget) to do this work. In the scramble, it has always been lost, but of course, much more is lost.
For new graphic designers and others hired as UI Designers, where form "over" function, (rather than "form following function"), is often the rule, this is instructive for those, who often aren't aware of this fundamental practice within the UI process.
Students (and the public) are a great resource, and even moreso in an informal testing context and time and resources should be included in any plan to develop software, not just talked about or added at the last minute.
