Great point Kyle. In a one-on-one situation, I would take your approach. The one-on-one case was also used in the cited card sorting exercise. It's probably best *not* to push someone when they're seated right next to you...

In a group situation, though, it may be different: there are time constraints on a lab, for example, and on people's attention spans. And it's easy for general confusion to fly if everyone's (literally) on different pages. Since we were partly interested in initial reactions to the visual design, site readability, and probable first clickthru paths, I felt keeping everyone together worked ok.

There were only 8 people in this case. The one who had the most difficulty, as it turns out, really probably shouldn't have been there -- she wasn't in the targeted audience (individuals who read news, on and off line) and had lots of content concerns because of that.
