I also believe that the term "usability" should not be altered. I am partial to it and I do think of it as an umbrella that encompasses many areas, including communication effectiveness. In my mind, if anything on a web site creates a bad, confusing, or frustrating experience for the user than the usability is poor. Remember, usability is not just about whether or not a user can complete a task... it's also about how easy/hard it is for them to do it (a "task" could be reading info about a product).
Usability is finally getting the recognition it deserves and it takes a long time to get the concept (and profession) ingrained into the indusrty.
Jeremy, how do you feel about communication effectiveness becoming it's own separate parctice...sort of the way Information Architecture and Interaction Design branched out? I believe that most of these professions have a root or connection to usability, but they warrant special attention. In my mind this profession already exists though... isn't communication effectiveness the job of the content manager and internet marketer?
I am very interested to hear what you think of this idea. Thank you for posting this topic it's a very interesting point you've made.
