Don't know of any workshops, but the first step is getting a hang of the theory of photography - i.e. the relationship between Light and Film Speed / Shutter Speed / Aperture (each of which are manual settings on a digital SLR or you can set two of them and let the camera select the third.
A little bit of reading on the basics and a lot of experimentation - same pic with different settings - will set you on your way ....
