These are the same people who can say "just a dog" and mean it. They don't get it. they don't want to get it. Best we can do is make it so unpleasant for them to mistreat a dog that they choose not to.

One of my students...not the sharpest tack in the box...just bought 2 very young puppies off the side of the road. (snarl, hiss, sigh) After one week, she is giving them away "because she can't get any sleep". Not only am I totally pissed at her, but her parents!!! They obviously have not taught her to respect animals, because obviously they do not respect animals themselves.

Did I mention that these will be the SECOND pair of dogs her family has "disposed of" because they're inconvenient?
