Ann,
We have always adopted from a MN rescue but now that we have relocated to TX, we have become more active in the Animal Defense League (the only no-kill shelter in the Southwest region).
I have observed something recently that I would like to share. We have been driving more residenial roads to avoid traffic jams on some of the freeways around San Antonio. In driving these back ways, we have noticed a large amount of dogs running free in packs. I had heard about this on the local news but couldn't imagine it. So many dogs are hit by cars and sometimes they are not taken to an emergency clinic but are left on the streets to die. I was horrified with this possibility.
Well, this morning I witnessed 2 separate packs of dogs running free and ripping open trash on the street corners. Mondays are trash days in most neighborhood in the northwest side of town.
My mind wondered some while watching these dogs and I seemed to associate them with groups of teenagers walking down the street. I felt that they were doing things that maybe a lone dog (or teenager) would not have done but in a pack, they did with the safety of the pack.
I am not sure why I was mesmerized by these dogs but I am having a hard time adjusting to this. Why do some parts of society treat their dogs as part of their family and others treat them like a commodity? Is it the way they were raised that makes the difference?
Thanks for listening. Pam
