Hi Gavin: First of all welcome to Ryze and to this beautiful adventure of starting your own label. You will actually find a lot of answers to your questions in Daylle D. Schwartz's book entitled "Start and run your own record label". Many musicians I know have read it as it is quite practical and informative. As for copyright, and legal issues your local VLA (volunteer lawyers for the arts) is the best resource you can get (and it's free!). They have a great library and often organize seminars about copyright issues. For more info (I assume you're in NY) log on to www.vlany.org. Also, do not hesitate to contact existing record labels that produce music similar to yours, studios, etc. and ask them specific questions.(Buy the "Indie bible" or the "Musician Atlas" and start calling...) It's a good way to start making useful contacts in the industry. Hope this helps. Best of luck, and if you ever need a music lawyer, you check out my page on Ryze. Cheers
Atossa
