WOW!! Thanks John for your honesty! This actually happened to me yesterday at our B2B mixer honoring our local public heroes. I was talking with a policewoman and a firefighter (male) that had just been interviewed by Fox5 in going out of their way to preserve lives. As this event honored them, I expressed my gratitude with warmth - as I do with most anyone anyway. The firefighter sat next to me while I was eating (he is married) and began asking very personal questions. Later, I thought back to what I might have done to provoke this questioning.
With this story as the backdrop, I would say that men need not be so forward and impatient. If a woman you just met smiles at you and is gregarious - I would suggest to focus on the lady and see how she is with others and learn who she is before you ASS-U-ME anything!
What is this woman's personality? Is she being nice to everyone? Who does she work for? Married? Children? Does she make a habit of going out for extra curricular activities after the networking event?
This are just a few questions to ask - time will always tell John - If you are available and interested in a woman - just WAIT - get to know her as a friend - be careful what you talk about - let her lead the subject matter and for goodness sake - DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING!!
I hope this helps - with my networking for our chamber, I give out my cards everywhere and can tell you that I'M NOT looking for a personal relationship - I'm there to feed my family and help others sincerely with their businesses!!! Nevermind the fact that I really love being around groups of people.
Does this make sense? :-) Best, Susan (The Nation's Capital)
