Susan, of course it does - your firefighter ... oops, bad choice of words! Your example male is the type who assumes that EVERY woman has got to be interested in HIM and that sub-species does not converse or relate.
Like any other person (male or female) with a one-track mind on any subject, they don't assume - they "know" until someone sets them straight and that change will probably only be temporary.
I think it's natural for men to probe but I agree about all the advice you gave except wait - have you ever met a patient man?
