Hi Michelle,
As a fellow Canadian, I understand your frustration that you can't search by
province or city in Canada. This is frustrating if you are looking for a
local lawyer or dentist. In my case, I do business globally, so when I
search, I usually don't restrict it to any one country.
You mentioned that connecting with people was more difficult because there
are no discussion groups, so you have to connect with people one-on-one.
This is true and it is a major difference between LinkedIn and Ryze.
However, I find ways to work with this rather than against it. Instead of
focusing on prospective buyers of my e-books and coaching, I focus on reaching
people that reach larger amounts of people. I search for "influencers"
that can bring me groups of clients instead of focusing on finding individual
clients. Examples for me would include, media representatives, executive
members of associations, college and university administrators, etc.
While LinkedIn doesn’t have its own discussion groups,
there are two free discussion groups run out of Yahoo Groups that will help you
learn how to use LinkedIn more effectively and give you an opportunity to build
your network.
