Wendy McClelland hi Julia - I've done a little "tweaking" for you:

The Top 5 Necessities for Your College Student

How time flies! One minute your kissing scraped knees, the next, you're packing them off to college!

Here's a quick list to make sure your college bound student has the most important "survival tools" for their educational adventure!

1. The right luggage is critical! Remember, these bags may be tossed about on planes, thrown under a bed, get dropped from a luggage rack on a bus - they need to be tough and sturdy! A bag on wheels, duffel bag and a carry on are the most important pieces. An additional piece that some students like to have is a garment bag - for those special clothes that require extra care. Remember - you're packing school supplies, as well as clothes so you'll need to have a number of pieces.

2. For any serious student the next most important thing is a computer (these days usually a laptop) that has lots of memory, the most current versions of any programs they need and very powerful virus protection software. Also, make sure your student has some kind of marking on the computer to identify it as theirs. Don't forget to insure the computer against loss or theft!

3. "ET call home" - that famous movie line reminds of us of the next critical element for any student! A cell phone or phone card. It's very important your child has a way to reach you if they need to - a pre-paid cell phone or phone card ensures that even if your child doesn't have cash they can still call you! They may be away from home, but they will always need their parents.

4. Comforts of home - these are the things that will help them feel they are in a "home away from home". These include a microwave (for those late night snacks and everyday meals), a TV (but only if you know your student doesn't waste too much time on it!), a good lamp (to be able to study well into the night). A family photo or two makes a dorm room much cosier too!

5. A goodie box or "care package", with all your child's favorite foods will be a sure winner - and help your child make new friends when they share the treats! Gift baskets are a wonderful treat to send - custom baskets can include your student's most treasured food memories from childhood and a few new treats.

Oh, and one last thing - the most important - hug them before they leave, and then make sure you do something nice for yourself - you've done a great job mom and dad!

---------------------------------

I hope this editing helps a little. Your outline was great - I just added a few things - I always write in the same language I speak in. This makes articles more conversational - and that's how people like to read. Also, I did fix the typos. I suggest you run spell check on any articles you send out. Saves lots of problems.

All the best,

Wendy McClelland
