Popularity of multiple email adresses is indeed due in part to spam. Personally, I have more than 10 email adresses that I use in an effort to reduce spam to my main account. Of the free webmail services the best I've found is Gmail. Gmail has a number of filtering and syndication features that work well to improve my information flow.
