What distinguishes this from the hundreds of other similar sites already in existence? In particular, the site is built using phpFox, a new PHP-based social networking platform (really, a MySpace clone) that sells for about $40.

When anyone anywhere can stick one of these up for less than $100 including domain name and hosting, where does the real value come in?

I've long said that the people are where the value is in a networking site, not the platform itself. Now, the platform can screw up the social aspect and people will migrate elsewhere (Friendster --> MySpace), but once certain basic functionality is met, the platform matters very little. People will tolerate a very simple platform without a lot of bells and whistles if that's where the people are actively engaged.

So for a new network like this to start and have even the slightest chance of success, you're going to have to do something to distinguish yourself -- target a particular niche, feature some unique original content, have some celebrities or business experts there that people want to connect with, etc.

But just a MySpace clone slapped on a server with only 25 members or so in it? What's the value proposition? What makes this interesting and compelling for me to even take half an hour to join, set up my profile, and make a few contacts?

I don't mean to be disparaging or discouraging. If you have a good answer to those questions I'll rush right over. If you don't, you need to, and that's the best business advice I can give you.
