Dec 30, 2003 5:14 pm Steve: Perils of being a solopreneur
Eric Sohn

Steve -

If I hear you right, you're saying that while you enjoy being a solo practitioner, you miss the sense of belonging that larger organizations can give you. Is that right?

If so, that's a very interesting observation. Are you familiar with Maslow's Ladder? Abraham Maslow proposed that there were 5 hierarchical needs we all have: physiological, safety, belonging/love, self-esteem and self-actualization.

Would it be fair to say that 9/11 (which you mention) knocked you down a few rungs on the ladder? Or is it the fact of getting older? Or am I totally off?

Could you have the best of both worlds - being a consultant in solo practice, and belonging to something that gave you social interaction and a sense of comfort? Does the group setting need to be professional or business-oriented?

Coach Eric
