Hi Eric:
Today's gatekeepers are much different than a generation ago and they can be a powerful ally to help get you what you want. Often a gatekeeper can be a person who's really on the pulse of the business. She/he can be a valuable source of information. So when you do finally get in front of the gatekeeper's boss you have an amazing toolbox of facts, problems and ideas that you can use that will get you closer to getting the business faster than all the people who tried so hard to totally avoid the gatekeeper in the first place.
If you're patient in many instances you can make the gatekeeper a friend and supporter helping you to get in front of the boss. Gatekeepers of important people are not high school kids with a ponytail and chewing gum. They are often highly educated and very sharp. Better to get on their good side than their bad side.
My former boss is a very successful multi-millionaire and he used to say, "I dunno Denise, what do you think we should do." If he asked my opinion - usually he went with it.
After that I suggest you get a copy of "The Power to Get In" by Michael Boylan and discover strategies that will help you gain access to the decision makers.
All the best,
