We looked at Fon - as a business model it has some major flaws, some of which are linked to obscure economic issues like 'the tragedy of the commons'. For instance, it pays a non-socially-minded individual to buy the lowest-cost, poorest-performing capacity necessary to join the network so that they can benefit from their neighbours higher bandwidth. This can lead to the eventual breakdown of the entire service, as those who feel that they are being taken advantage of drop out and the quality of the network drops rather than increases.

It's a bit like communism - a nice idea destroyed by individual greed.
