Yuganta (Irawati Karve) - an exploration of the characters in Mahabharata like no other (recommended, even if you never really read the mahabharata) - published first in 1967 - the author got a doctorate in anthropology from Berlin univ (in german) in 1928 which I think is a feat!
Mans search for meaning - Viktor Frankl (holocaust victim narrating his experiences from Auchwitz) - described how inner spiritial and moral strength helps one endure when everything one has believed in the world is lost, the deepest desire of a man is his search for meaning
India Unbound - Gurcharan Das

Also started with
Neitzche's "Will to power - attempt at a reevaluation of all values"
Jorge Luis Borges' "Labyrinths - a collection of short stories".
